Victor DiOrio of Diorio's Pizza & Pub will be taking a trip to Parma, Italy to compete in the 23rd annual World Pizza Championships. DiOrio, who co-owns DiOrio's with brother Tony DiOrio, won an all-expenses paid trip the tournament, which will be held April 7 through 9 in Parma, Italy. The World Pizza Championships, referred to by many as the "Olympics" of pizza making. More than 30 countries compete in 32 events, including traditional pizza, largest dough stretch, pan pizza and fastest pie maker. DiOrio earned a spot on the U.S. pizza team by winning the statewide Bluegrass Bakeoff pizza competition in Lexington last year. Diorio, who's pizzeria was noted by Eater readers as one of the city's underrated gems, will compete in the traditional pizza category. It will DiOrio's first time in Italy, and while he told Business First he is interested in seeing other pizza making techniques, he said "I would like to win too. Don't get me wrong."
