Celebrate America's Oddest BBQ At Owensboro's "International Bar-B-Q" Fest

Every second weekend in May since 1978, the city of Owensboro has hosted its annual "International Bar-B-Q Festival." Primarily a fundraising forum for local charities, this Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10, the event features team and individual competitions, plenty of burgoo and possibly some "international" offerings (cheesy Chinese-made merchandise is "international," isn't it?) along with plenty of mutton barbecue. Mutton is the odd meat choice that made Owensboro famous (well, among barbecue aficionados, anyway). There's a 5K run/walk, face painting, keg tossing and more. However, the real score is a "Mutton Glutton" pass, a 1- or 2-day ticket to as much mature sheep as you can stuff in your face—or as the festival organizers put it, "enjoying the International Bar-B-Q Festival at its finest."
