Esquire Magazine included Louisville's Hot Brown Sandwich along with Chicago's Jibarito, Miami's Medianoche, Sioux City Iowa's Loosemeat and others as one of America's "Great Regional Sandwiches" in its September issue. The magazine notes the turkey, bacon, tomato and bubbling mornay sandwich was created "at the Brown Hotel in 1926 for attendees of its famous all-night parties." The magazine adds current Brown Hotel Executive Chef Josh Bettis finds roasted vegetables "are an acceptable stand-in for the turkey," something that may come a surprise to Hot Brown traditionalists, but may possibly help to include vegetarians in future end-of-bacchanal activities around town.
